The glorious 8-day power reserve of Panerai's headline grabbing, in-house movement, the P.5000, is not just the result of superb engineering and watchmaking savoir faire. It also, like so many aspects of the company's attention to detail, has its roots in Panerai history. 8-day watches were pioneered to meet the stringent demands of the Italian Navy back in the early days of the brand's military career. Back then, they used a 16-ligne Angelus calibre; 70 years later the dimensions have “shrunk” to a robust 15.75 lignes (and 4.5mm height), and it uses two mainsprings in series to generate the whopping power reserve, all built in the Neuchâtel workshop.
