The North Face

The North Face began in 1966 as a climbing and backpacking shop in San Francisco, opened by Douglas Tompkins and Susie Tompkins Buell and named after the coldest, most difficult side of a mountain. It moved into making its own tents, sleeping bags and technical clothing, and its down jackets, including the 1992 Nuptse, crossed over from expeditions to city streets. Owned by VF Corporation since 2000, the brand moved its headquarters from Alameda, California, to Denver in 2019.
