Jake Burton Carpenter started building snowboards in a barn in Londonderry, Vermont, in 1977, and spent the next four decades campaigning to get the sport onto ski slopes and into the Olympics. Burton, now based in Burlington, makes boards, bindings and boots as well as outerwear and layers for the mountain, and since Carpenter's death in 2019 it has remained in the hands of his wife, Donna Carpenter.
