Tomoaki Okaniwa's background in painting feels like unlikely groundwork for fashion, but it laid the foundation for his career. Outgrowing his love for the canvas, the Japanese designer branched out into textile, and launched his debut menswear label The Viridi-anne in 2001. Establishing a brick and mortar store in Shibuya, Tokyo in 2003, it was obvious from the get-go that the designer's clothing line is more than just fashion. Inspired by art and the artists that crafted them, Okaniwa's approach to design seems like art brought to life: thought provoking and intriguing.
