Charles H. Alden founded the Alden Shoe Company in Middleborough, Massachusetts, in 1884, and it is still family-owned and still makes its shoes there, with a workforce of around 100, many of them second or third generation. Alden is best known for its shell cordovan, bought from Chicago's Horween tannery since the 1930s, on bluchers, loafers, chukkas and boots that have become American classics.
