Mackintosh

In 1823 the Glasgow chemist Charles Macintosh patented a cloth waterproofed with dissolved rubber, and the coat that took his name, with an added 'k', became British shorthand for a raincoat. Mackintosh still makes its rubberised coats by hand in Cumbernauld, outside Glasgow, where one craftsperson cuts, glues and tapes each coat from start to finish. Owned by Tokyo's Yagi Tsusho since 2007, the house has grown into wool coats, trenches, knitwear and umbrellas for women and men.
